Wisconsinite Joseph McCarthy was elected to the Senate on November 5, 1946, after defeating incumbent Senator Robert LaFollette Jr. in an ugly primary campaign and winning the general election. In the Senate, McCarthy would lead a crusade against threats to American security that came not from outside enemies, he claimed, but from within.
